VSP Spotlight: Grant Lobo

This week’s VSP spotlight is on Grant Lobo!

Grant, an elite tennis player, is one of VSP’s most consistent athletes. Coach Jordan proudly touts Grant as one of his first ‘all-in’ Velocity athletes. Starting as a chaotic 7 year old with talent, back in the summer of 2019, Grant trained virtually from his basement through the dog days of the pandemic shutdown, navigating the time-on-task demands of a blossoming tennis career and the social demands of being a middle school boy!

Grant epitomizes commitment to Long Term Athletic Development. Patient and intentional, Grant is on the rise.

Grant is currently ranked as the 13th best player for his age group in the state of New York and the 197th best player in his age group nationally. Pairing consistency and hard work with his skills on the court has yielded fantastic outcomes. Let’s dive into it!

Over the past year, Grant has dedicated himself to a weekly training program, shifting structural vectors monthly to precisely mirror his competition schedule. Oscillating between mobility/stability phases and strength/power building, his current format has paid off immensely.

Grant has gained 20 pounds through natural development, a disciplined routine, and a nutritional approach that can be sustained by a middle school athlete. In addition, he has built a formidable strength foundation, falling in love with Hex Bar Deadlifts and increasing almost all of his core lifts within his program by up to 50 pounds.

Let’s dive into the success he’s had on the court in the past calendar year:

  •  Qualified for the main draw of the prestigious International Orange Bowl. Former champions of this event include Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer, and Andy Roddick.
  •  Qualified for the Winter National Championships in San Antonio, TX, and was a consolation finalist.
  •  Won back-to-back USTA Level 5 singles tournaments and two Level 5 doubles tournaments this fall in the 14 and under division.
  •  Selected as the junior United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern Section Ambassador, representing his section.

For Grant, the gains on and off the court have been remarkable. His consistency in the gym has been commendable. We are super excited to see how he continues this positive trajectory as he takes on these next, pivotal steps into the world of national and international tennis competition.

Keep it up, kid!

As always, see you in the gym!
